Reshaping the Uncomfortable Conversations Around Mental Health.

It’s been a long day of travel for me and I finally made it to Ottawa, our spectacular Nation’s capital! I love this city and have so many fond memories from recent visits.

On Wednesday, I’ll be speaking at the Knowledge Exchange Summit at the Chateau Fairmont in front of public officials and members of the mental health community. Needless to say, I’m very excited and honored!

Tomorrow I’ll be talking about mental health awareness, especially for men because guys in general, have a hard time acknowledging that they struggle with their mental health. One of my key points I want to deliver is that mental health isn’t just about whether or not you have Depression, BPD, OCD, Schizophrenia, Anxiety or any of the labeled disorders. Mental health is also about acknowledging when we feel: stress, angry, overwhelmed, frustrated, sad or disappointed.

I know guys (myself included at one time) who turn away from the conversation about feelings and mental health. It makes them twitch and feel uncomfortable. It also makes them defensive and they quickly deflect the conversation. I used to be that guy too.

On life and happinessIronically, when we turn away from the uncomfortable conversations about mental health, that’s when we know there’s a lot of denial and fear still inside of us. I like the recent quote by NBA coach Gregg Popovich, “There has to be an uncomfortable element in the discourse for anything to change…”

If that discomfort still exists, it’s a reminder that we need to keep talking about it to make it comfortable and make it part of our everyday language.

And there you have it, a short post that I wanted to write that hits the very heart of my message tomorrow…now time for me to keep practicing my speech!
